ANCAP, the Australasian New Car Assessment Program, is supported by all Australian motoring clubs. As Australasia’s leading independent vehicle testing body, ANCAP undertakes crash testing of new cars and awards star ratings for safety. ANCAP and RACT recommend that car buyers purchase only 5-star -rated vehicles. Follow this link to download the results of ANCAP’s 2011 testing program. Thank you Rod, that's a good point.

ANCAP has tested over cars since 1993 and those ratings are available on the ANCAP website. If however the car you are looking for is not there, accessing www.howsafeisyourcar.com.au will provide you a comprehensive list of vehicle safety ratings based on ANCAP ratings and the Used Car Safety Ratings (UCSR). The UCSR data is based on statistics collected from crashes in Australia and New Zealand between 1982 and 2009 where a death or serious injury occurred.

Since we can't all afford to rush out to buy a new car, it would be very handy to be able to look up the safety rating of a used car, before purchasing it.

If such a listing is available, can the ANCAP organisation make the facility known? Maybe a link from the RACT, RACV, NRMA etc. sites.

If not published, then can the various motoring bodies ask that the past year's info be made available? Maybe twenty years worth.
